How to Become a U.S. Citizen: The N-400 and Citizenship Test Guide
How to become a U.S. citizen (naturalization): eligibility, Form N-400, the interview and the English/civics test.
What is naturalization?
Naturalization is the process by which a Green Card holder becomes a U.S. citizen. Citizenship brings rights such as voting, a U.S. passport and protection from deportation.
General eligibility rules
- Usually holding a Green Card for at least 5 years (3 years if married to a U.S. citizen).
- Meeting physical-presence and continuous-residence requirements.
- Good moral character.
- Basic English and knowledge of U.S. history and government.
Form N-400
The process begins with Form N-400 (Application for Naturalization). A biometrics appointment and an interview follow.
The interview and the test
At the interview an officer reviews your application, assesses your English speaking, reading and writing, and gives the civics test. The test is a set of oral questions drawn from an official list.
